Role Purpose
As the second-in-command within our finance team, you will take full operational ownership of the day-to-day accounting function. This is a highly rewarding, “sleeves-rolled-up” role designed for a proactive, qualified or part qualified accountant. While you will lead high-level management accounting and support the Finance Director on strategic tasks, you must be equally comfortable diving into transaction-level detail and running operational processes when the business requires it.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Month-End Close: Lead and execute the full month-end process, producing accurate management accounts, balance sheet reconciliations, and variance analysis within set deadlines.
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Assist the FD in building the annual budget and maintaining dynamic rolling cash flow forecasts.
- KPI Analysis: Develop and distribute meaningful operational KPIs to departmental heads, acting as a supportive financial business partner.
- Year-End & Audit: Prepare comprehensive year-end audit packs and serve as the main operational point of contact for external auditors.
Operational & Transactional Oversight (Hands-On)
- Daily Ledgers: Provide active oversight of Accounts Payable (AP), Accounts Receivable (AR), and credit control. Step in to process transactions, post journals, or resolve supplier queries during peak periods or team absences.
- Tax & Compliance: Prepare, check, and submit quarterly VAT returns and ensure absolute alignment with HMRC guidelines (including PAYE/CIS if applicable).
- Banking & Treasury: Monitor daily cash flow balances, approve payment runs, and oversee multi-currency bank reconciliations.
Candidate Profile
Qualifications & Experience
- Professional Qualification: Fully qualified or part qualified accountant (ACCA, CIMA, or ACA).
- SME Background: Proven experience working in a UK SME or mid-market business (ideally £10M–£50M turnover), understanding the agility required in a lean team.
- Leadership: Demonstrated experience managing or supervising at least one or two direct reports.
Skills & Attributes
- Sleeves-Rolled-Up Attitude: A genuine willingness to get stuck into foundational tasks without considering them “beneath” the role.
- Systems & Excel: Highly proficient in mid-market cloud accounting software (e.g., Xero, Sage, or NetSuite) and advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, complex formulas).
- Commute: Based within a reasonable commuting distance of Guildford.
What We Offer
- Benefits: pension, holiday allowance, bonus.
- Working Pattern: 4 days office / 1 day remote
