Graduate Quantity Surveyor
Reporting To – Commercial Manager
Location – Belfast
Job Purpose – The Graduate Quantity Surveyor will support the commercial team in the successful delivery of construction and infrastructure projects. The role offers an excellent opportunity to develop professional quantity surveying skills while working alongside experienced commercial professionals. The successful candidate will assist with cost management, procurement, contract administration, valuations, and project reporting, while progressing towards professional accreditation where applicable.
Key Responsibilities Commercial Management
- Assist in the preparation of project cost plans and budgets.
- Support the monitoring and control of project costs throughout the project lifecycle.
- Assist with the preparation and submission of interim valuations and final accounts.
- Monitor project expenditure against budgets and identify cost variances.
- Support the preparation of financial reports and forecasts.
Procurement
- Assist in obtaining quotations and tenders from subcontractors and suppliers.
- Support the evaluation and comparison of tender returns.
- Assist with the preparation of subcontract documentation and purchase orders.
- Maintain accurate procurement records.
Contract Administration
- Support the administration of contracts in accordance with company procedures.
- Assist with the preparation and management of change control documentation.
- Maintain contract records, correspondence, and commercial files.
- Assist in resolving commercial issues and contractual queries.
Measurement and Valuation
- Undertake quantity take-offs and measurement from drawings and specifications.
- Assist in the preparation of bills of quantities where required.
- Support the valuation of completed works and variations.
Project Support
- Attend project meetings and site visits as required.
- Liaise with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, and clients.
- Ensure commercial activities are aligned with project objectives.
- Contribute to the successful delivery of projects on time and within budget.
Learning and Development
- Participate in the company’s graduate development programme.
- Work towards chartered status through RICS, CIOB, or other relevant professional bodies.
- Complete training and development activities as agreed with line management.
- Continuously develop technical, commercial, and professional knowledge.
Person Specification Essential Qualifications
- Degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
- Full UK driving licence (where project travel is required).
Essential Skills and Experience
- Strong numerical and analytical skills.
- Good understanding of construction principles and commercial practices.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage workload and meet deadlines.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
Desirable
- Previous work placement or internship within construction, engineering, or infrastructure.
- Knowledge of NEC, JCT, or other standard forms of contract.
- Familiarity with cost management or estimating software.

Typical Salary Range: £28,000 – £30,000 depending on location, qualifications, and experience.
