Senior Embedded Software/Firmware Engineer
We’re looking for an experienced Embedded Software Engineer to join a growing UK defence engineering business developing advanced electronic systems.
This is a hands-on role where you’ll work directly with the hardware, developing embedded software from the ground up rather than maintaining an established codebase. You’ll be involved in everything from low-level firmware and hardware bring-up through to real-time performance, testing and production.
You’ll work closely with electronics, controls and test engineers, with plenty of opportunity to influence technical decisions and take ownership of your work.
Skills & Experience
We’re interested in speaking with engineers who have strong embedded software or firmware experience. You don’t need to have worked across every area below to be considered.
- Strong commercial Embedded C and/or C++ development experience
- Experience developing firmware for microcontrollers or embedded hardware
- Bare-metal and/or RTOS development
- Low-level software development, including device drivers and hardware interfaces
- Hands-on hardware integration, debugging and troubleshooting
- Experience working with real-time or resource-constrained embedded systems
- Comfortable working closely with electronic hardware and other engineering disciplines
Useful Experience:
- ARM-based microcontrollers
- Hardware bring-up and board-level debugging
- JTAG, oscilloscopes and logic analysers
- Motor control, power electronics or other real-time control applications
- CAN, SPI, I2C, UART or similar communication protocols
- Bootloaders and firmware update mechanisms
- Safety-critical or high-reliability embedded software
- Automated firmware testing and HIL environments
- MATLAB / Simulink or Model-Based Design
- Aerospace, defence, robotics, automotive or industrial embedded systems
- Taking embedded products from prototype through to production
