New Opportunity – Senior Mechanical Engineer (Pressure Vessels)

Are you an experienced Mechanical Engineer ready to take the next step in your career, or just looking for a new challenge? Do you enjoy working within the energy sector?

Our client is looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer within the Energy sector who is ready to take on new challenges in their role with an expanding global team.

As the Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will:

  • Review customer specifications, equipment datasheets, P&IDs and relevant international standards.
  • Liaise with customers, suppliers and inspectors to resolve technical queries.
  • Carry out mechanical design calculations for pressure vessels in line with relevant industry codes and standards.
  • Design shell and tube heat exchangers, including tube sheets, expansion joints and channels.
  • Use specialist software such as PV Elite, COMPRESS or similar, verifying results through calculations and FEA where required.
  • Select suitable materials and components based on operating conditions, corrosion requirements and fabrication methods.
  • Work closely with thermal engineers and CAD teams to develop, review and verify designs and fabrication drawings.
  • Ensure compliance with pressure equipment regulations, certification requirements, welding and inspection standards.
  • Prepare calculation reports and technical documentation for customer approval and certification bodies.
  • Review supplier drawings and calculations, resolving technical issues and non-conformances.
  • Check design calculations and documentation, taking responsibility for complex projects at Senior level.
  • Support and mentor graduate and junior engineers.
  • Ensure designs meet customer requirements and project budgets, managing changes to the agreed scope.
  • Support site surveys and condition assessments of existing pressure equipment.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry standards and improve design tools, templates and procedures.

The essential requirements for this role are:

  • Experience of the mechanical design of pressure vessels to at least one recognised code: EN 13445, ASME VIII Div. 1, PD 5500 or AD 2000. Experience of one code is sufficient; we do not expect candidates to be expert in all four
  • Experience of using pressure vessel design software such as PV Elite, COMPRESS, AutoPIPE Vessel or Finglow
  • Ability to check software results by hand calculation and explain the basis of a design
  • Understanding of pressure vessel materials, welding, NDT and pressure testing
  • Understanding of the Pressure Equipment Directive (2014/68/EU) and/or the UK Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, including equipment categorisation
  • Experience of communicating design requirements to CAD and fabrication teams through sketches, drawings and technical specifications
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or international equivalent), or HND with equivalent pressure vessel design experience
  • Typically, 3+ years of pressure vessel design experience
  • Typically, 6+ years of pressure vessel design experience, including checking the work of others, to be considered for the ‘Senior’ role

Desirable experience for this role is:

  • Mechanical design of shell and tube heat exchangers to TEMA
  • Experience of working with Notified Bodies, UK Approved Bodies, ASME Authorized Inspectors or third-party inspectors
  • Nozzle load assessment (e.g. WRC 537 / WRC 297), design by analysis and FEA, using software such as NozzlePRO, Autodesk Nastran or Ansys
  • Experience of ASME U-stamp (ASME Certification Mark) projects
  • Fitness-for-service assessment of equipment in service (e.g. API 579-1/ASME FFS-1)
  • Understanding of heat exchanger thermal design, and familiarity with Aspen EDR or HTRI
  • Experience in the energy, power or process sectors, such as gas turbine, hydrogen or carbon capture
  • Member of a relevant professional engineering institution (e.g. IMechE), working towards Chartered status or national equivalent

About this role:

  • Competitive salary depending on experience
  • Career progression and professional development opportunities
  • Supportive, collaborative, and innovative work environment
