Lead Electrical Engineer

Company: Briggs of Burton
Apply for the Lead Electrical Engineer
Location: Burton upon Trent
Job Description:

Are you an experienced Electrical Engineer with strong control panel design expertise and the technical ability to take ownership of complex electrical engineering activities?

Briggs is looking for a capable, hands-on Lead Electrical Engineer to join our engineering team. We’re seeking an engineer with substantial practical electrical design experience, strong technical judgement and the confidence to independently develop, check and resolve complex electrical design challenges.

This is a role for someone who can do more than interpret drawings. You’ll need to understand the underlying electrical engineering principles, make sound technical decisions, produce accurate design documentation and ensure solutions meet the required technical, safety and quality standards.

The role will involve working with colleagues, customers and project teams across international locations. The successful candidate must be willing and able to undertake international travel, including overnight stays away from home, to support project requirements.

What you’ll be doing

  • Take ownership of electrical engineering design activities, from interpreting project specifications and defining design requirements through to producing and checking detailed electrical design documentation.
  • Independently develop electrical schematics, circuit diagrams, wiring diagrams, panel layouts and associated engineering drawings.
  • Design electrical control panels, selecting appropriate electrical components and ensuring their correct integration into the overall system.
  • Produce and maintain electrical design documentation using Promis.e, ensuring drawings, component information, wiring details and associated records are accurate and consistent.
  • Apply sound engineering judgement when selecting components, assessing design options and resolving technical issues.
  • Review electrical designs for technical accuracy, completeness, safety, compliance and suitability for manufacture, installation and maintenance.
  • Interpret customer specifications and translate functional and operational requirements into practical electrical design solutions.
  • Investigate design issues, identify root causes and implement effective corrective actions, working with other engineering disciplines where necessary.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of electrical protection, control circuits, component ratings, wiring requirements and the practical considerations involved in designing reliable industrial electrical systems.
  • Apply relevant electrical engineering standards and regulatory requirements, recognising where specialist advice or further technical verification is required.
  • Understand hazardous area requirements, including ATEX, and their implications for equipment selection and electrical design where applicable.
  • Liaise with mechanical engineers, project managers, manufacturing teams, customers and other stakeholders to resolve design interfaces and deliver project requirements.
  • Support engineering activities throughout manufacture, inspection, testing, commissioning and handover, including investigating and resolving electrical issues when they arise.
  • Manage engineering deliverables, competing priorities and project deadlines while maintaining a high standard of technical quality.
  • Travel internationally when required, including overnight stays, to support project delivery, technical discussions and on-site engineering activities.

Technical skills, knowledge and experience

We’re looking for a candidate who can demonstrate a strong level of practical electrical engineering competence and the ability to work with minimal day-to-day technical supervision.

Electrical design and control systems

  • Proven experience in industrial electrical engineering design, with the ability to develop electrical designs from specifications and functional requirements rather than relying solely on existing drawings.
  • Strong experience in electrical control panel design, including the selection, sizing and integration of components such as circuit protection devices, contactors, relays, power supplies, control equipment and terminal assemblies, as relevant to the application.
  • The ability to produce and interpret detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts and bills of materials.
  • A sound understanding of control circuits, power distribution within control panels, electrical protection, earthing, cable and conductor selection, and the relationship between design decisions and safe, reliable operation.
  • The ability to identify design conflicts, assess technical risks and develop appropriate engineering solutions independently.

Electrical CAD and design documentation

  • Practical experience using Promis.e to create, modify and manage electrical schematics and associated design documentation.
  • The ability to produce clear, structured and technically accurate drawings suitable for use by manufacturing, installation, testing and commissioning teams.
  • Experience checking drawings and documentation for consistency, component references, wiring information and compliance with project requirements.

Standards, safety and compliance

  • A demonstrable understanding of applicable electrical engineering standards and regulatory requirements, with the ability to identify which requirements apply to a particular design.
  • Knowledge of machine and industrial electrical safety principles, electrical protection and the importance of designing for safe installation, operation and maintenance.
  • Understanding of ATEX and hazardous area requirements, including the implications for equipment selection and design compliance.
  • The ability to recognise the limits of personal competence and seek specialist input when a design involves unfamiliar standards, hazardous area classification or safety-critical decisions.

Testing, troubleshooting and project delivery

  • Experience investigating electrical faults and design problems, interpreting technical information and identifying root causes rather than relying on trial and error.
  • The ability to review designs against specifications, resolve technical queries and support manufacturing and site teams with clear engineering guidance.
  • Experience working within engineering projects, coordinating design deliverables and responding effectively to changing priorities and technical requirements.
  • Strong communication skills, enabling complex technical information to be explained clearly to colleagues, customers and other stakeholders.

About you

You’ll be an experienced electrical engineer who combines detailed technical knowledge with a practical, delivery-focused approach.

You should be able to demonstrate that you can:

  • Work independently on electrical design tasks and take ownership of technical deliverables.
  • Make reasoned engineering decisions and explain the technical basis for them.
  • Produce accurate designs that can be taken forward confidently by manufacturing, installation and commissioning teams.
  • Identify when a design is technically incorrect, incomplete or potentially unsafe, and take appropriate action.
  • Balance technical quality, compliance, cost and project deadlines.
  • Work effectively with colleagues across different engineering disciplines and international locations.
  • Travel internationally and stay away from home when project requirements demand it.

A relevant electrical engineering qualification, or equivalent demonstrable professional experience, is expected.

If you have the technical depth, design capability and practical engineering experience to take ownership of electrical engineering deliverables, we’d like to hear from you.
