Activity Coordinator – Youth Mentor Programme – Reading

Company: Get Set UK
Apply for the Activity Coordinator – Youth Mentor Programme – Reading
Location: Reading
Job Description:

Make the session worth turning up for. Then make it lead somewhere.

Gaming, virtual reality, sport, creative arts and the outdoors. These are your tools for reaching young people aged 18 to 24 who have not connected with traditional employment support. Every session has a second purpose: helping each young person see the skills they are building and take a step towards work, education or training.

If you coach, teach, train or run creative or sporting sessions, you already know how to hold a room. Here, the result is a young person who can name what they are good at and say it to an employer.

The opportunity

You will own the activity programme for young people aged 18 to 24, who are adults, not children. You will plan it, book venues and specialist providers, run the sessions and give each a clear purpose. With Mentors and Employer Engagement colleagues, you will match people to the right activities, bring in local employers and shape each person’s next steps.

Attendance, engagement and progression are measured, and the targets do not change. Not every young person will be receptive, and some arrive with bad experiences of education or work, so you will need resilience. Wanting to help people is a great start, but you also need to want to understand the commercials: what the contract says and why we need the outputs. You will travel daily between venues across Berkshire and Oxfordshire, including rural areas, and work in person, as homeworking is not available. If you would rather run activities without targets, this may not be the role for you.

What you’ll be doing

  • Running a rolling programme of group and individual activities, from sport and creative arts to gaming and volunteering.
  • Giving every session a clear purpose, so young people can name their new skills and use them in a CV or interview.
  • Arranging employer talks, workplace visits and mock recruitment exercises.
  • Working with Mentors to match people to activities and act early when attendance drops.
  • Coordinating venues, providers and an agreed budget, and keeping accurate, audit-ready records.

What you’ll need

Essential (you need all of these):

  • Experience of planning, coordinating and delivering engaging group activities for young people or young adults, such as sport or arts.
  • Evidence of turning creative, recreational or community activities into learning that builds employability or personal development.
  • Experience of facilitating groups with different levels of confidence and support needs, building rapport while keeping clear professional boundaries, and managing group dynamics, sensitive conversations and challenging behaviour.
  • Experience of coordinating several activities, venues, providers or resources at once, and the ability to take ownership quickly without ongoing direction.
  • Experience of keeping accurate electronic records of participation, progress and outcomes, and confident use of Microsoft Office and Teams.
  • A practical understanding of safeguarding, professional boundaries, confidentiality, risk assessment and data protection, and of the barriers young people can face.
  • Being able to drive and cover the Berkshire and Oxfordshire area, including rural locations.
  • Willingness to work outside standard hours where participants’ needs require it.
  • No specific qualifications are required.

Desirable (welcome, not required): experience in employability or careers advice, youth work, coaching or mentoring; a relevant qualification or first-aid certificate; knowledge of local youth services.

What good looks like in this role

These describe how we work. They are not extra requirements.

  • People and Communication:You coach young people to build confidence and new skills, and work with Mentors, employers and partners.
  • Strategic direction:You try new ideas for sessions and welcome change, asking whether it helps a young person move on.
  • Deliver results:You review attendance and feedback honestly, own it when a session misses, and change what you do next time.
  • Get it right:You follow safeguarding, risk and data requirements, and do what you say you will do.
