Senior Materials Engineer

Overview

Senior Engineer within the Materials Technology team, supporting regional and global engineering and production with failure evaluation, materials testing, and lab process compliance. You’ll coordinate investigations, perform teardown and metallography, and liaise with global labs to ensure high-quality results and actionable insights. Opportunities include shaping lab policies, optimizing testing capacity, and advising customers on investigative approaches. You will work cross-functionally to drive improvements and cost-effective lab operations.

Responsibilities

• Advise and coordinate failure evaluation processes, interpret results, report findings, and drive corrective actions
• Provide engineering consultancy on materials and production processes, including teardown and lab testing for regional/global teams
• Support development and implementation of lab policies and ISO/IEC/EHS 5S compliance
• Coordinate lab purchasing within budget and assist cost estimation for lab needs
• Collaborate with Friedrichshafen Materials Lab to optimize efficiency and balance regional testing capacity
• Perform teardown of mechanical assemblies, precise sectioning, and metallographic preparation with high accuracy
• Apply materials lab analytical techniques to support customer requests and advise on investigations
• Liaise with regional/global Engineering and Quality functions, produce detailed lab reports, and attend customer meetings as required

Key requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Materials, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering (or comparable field)
• Around 5 years of professional experience in testing or quality, preferably automotive
• Familiarity with test specifications of major OEMs and international standards (ISO, IEC, DIN)
• Strong knowledge of metals and failure analysis, including metallography
• Hands-on experience with SEM-EDX and non-destructive methods (X-ray, FTIR); basic PCB knowledge advantageous
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
• Solid budgeting understanding and ability to develop business cases for operational/capital needs
• Business-fluent English; German beneficial with willingness for limited travel
