Overview

As a Materials Engineer in the Gloucester supply chain team, you will monitor and improve the materials flow for landing gear parts. You’ll work with metallurgical specialists and suppliers to ensure material performance and compliance. You’ll contribute to testing, forensic investigations, and supplier qualification to support safe, reliable aircraft systems. This role sits at the intersection of materials science and supplier quality, within a global, innovation-driven aerospace leader.

Responsibilities

  • Involvement in laboratory tasks with raw material suppliers, forgers and foundries
  • Review metallic supplier performance and production data
  • Implement improvement plans for steel, aluminium and titanium materials in the SLS supply base
  • Conduct technical supplier audits with QA support
  • Support qualification of new raw material suppliers (e.g., steel mills)
  • Assist internal Materials Validation Board (MVB) activities
  • Support engineering and internal customers with materials topics
  • Coordinate laboratory testing campaigns on metallic, surface engineering/protection, and non-metallic materials
  • Participate in forensic investigation of landing gear parts

Key requirements

  • Degree in metallurgy or materials engineering/science
  • Knowledge of metallurgy for steels, titanium and aluminium alloys
  • Data processing software skills
  • Ability to interpret material/process specifications
  • Hands-on metallographic prep, microscopy and materials testing experience
  • Strong technical reporting and documentation skills
  • Effective communication of technical information to internal customers and suppliers
  • Flexibility to undertake varied duties across engineering, special processes and supply chain
  • Experience in supply chain monitoring related to forging/melting practices
  • Understanding of degradation and failure mechanisms in engineering materials
  • Willingness to visit suppliers multiple times per year
