Overview
As Head of Enterprise IT Architecture, you will shape the architectural strategy across a large, heterogeneous technology landscape. You will lead enterprise, domain and solution architecture to ensure systems are robust, scalable and interoperable in support of the Institute’s research mission. You will chair governance bodies, align designs with strategic priorities, and manage technical debt while enabling sustainable innovation. You will collaborate with senior leaders across scientific, operational and technology teams to translate strategy into actionable roadmaps. Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate IT architecture across enterprise applications, web, compute, databases and infrastructure.
- Chair the Technical Design Authority and oversee architectural governance and design assurance.
- Develop and maintain architecture principles, standards and roadmaps; map IDS systems and applications.
- Review and approve key solution designs ensuring alignment with standards and strategic goals.
- Guide technology adoption with a focus on security, scalability and long-term sustainability.
- Oversee simplification and rationalisation of the technology estate to reduce technical debt and improve efficiency.
- Represent the Institute in external architecture forums and build strategic partnerships.
- Navigate architectural transformation balancing standardisation with scientific flexibility and innovation.
Key requirements
- TOGAF or other enterprise architecture framework knowledge
- In-depth cloud, data, integration and application architecture experience
- Architecture principles, standards development and technology road mapping
- IT risk management, tech debt management and obsolescence planning
- Demonstrated leadership in IT solution architecture
- Experience leading design governance (e.g., Technical Design Authority)
- Proven track record reducing technical debt in complex IT estates
- Experience managing multi-disciplinary architectural teams
- Ability to translate institutional strategy into actionable roadmaps
- Ability to evaluate and select IT platforms, infrastructure and tools
- Strong data interoperability and standardisation understanding
