Principal Consultant – CDM & Construction Safety (London and South East)

Overview

In this role you lead CDM Principal Designer delivery on complex, high-value projects, shaping design risk management and statutory compliance. You’ll guide client and design-team engagement, mentor colleagues, and influence risk-reduction through design across RIBA Stages 2–5. You’ll contribute to the service offering and drive safe, compliant delivery at scale. This is a high-autonomy role with a clear impact on project outcomes and safety culture.

Responsibilities

• Lead CDM / PD delivery across multiple projects
• Own design risk management strategy and challenge risks in design
• Chair design risk workshops, coordination meetings, and project reviews
• Provide authoritative advice on statutory duties under CDM and Building Safety Act
• Oversee quality of deliverables: PCI, Design Risk Registers/ Hazard Logs, Health and Safety Files
• Act as Principal Designer under Building Safety Act where required
• Influence design teams to achieve practical risk reduction
• Manage delivery within scope, programme and commercial expectations
• Support proposals, scopes and fee submissions
• Contribute to internal standards, tools and best practice

Key requirements

• Extensive CDM/construction safety experience including leading PD appointments
• Strong knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015 and practical application
• Experience undertaking/leading Principal Designer duties under the Building Safety Act
• Understanding of design processes and RIBA stages, ability to influence development
• Proven ability to lead risk management discussions and challenge design decisions
• Experience managing multiple projects, priorities and client relationships
• Commercial awareness (scope, fees, delivery expectations)
