In-House legal counsel – Corporate – Carlisle/Edinburgh

Overview

In this in-house senior legal role, you provide strategic legal guidance to board and senior management, shaping governance and corporate strategy. You will oversee corporate processes, acquisitions, compliance issues, and key transactions, while managing relationships with regulators, external counsel, and other stakeholders. The position combines high-level advisory work with risk management and cross-functional collaboration to support business growth and governance. You will stay ahead of legislation and craft agreements that protect the company’s legal rights. This is an opportunity to influence strategic direction in a respected organization.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic legal advice to board and senior management
• Set governance policies and monitor external factors
• Handle corporate processes including acquisitions, compliance, transactions, and agreements
• Maintain trustful relationships with regulators, external counsel, politicians, clients, landlords
• Draft and review agreements to minimise risk and maximise rights
• Manage complex matters spanning legal and related areas
• Structure and review reports and legal documents
• Stay abreast of legislative changes and meet legal objectives

Key requirements

• Proven general counselling experience in a business environment with commercial awareness
• Project management and property experience
• Broad knowledge across corporate law, litigation, labour law, etc.
• Ability to develop legal strategy and objectives
• High ethics, integrity, and gravitas
• Excellent judgement and analytical skills
• First-class interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to anticipate legal issues or risks; proactive mindset
• Degree in Law; dual Scots and English qualification preferred
