Head of Heath & Safety – Rail Infrastructure

Overview

As Head of Health & Safety, you will lead HS&E across a portfolio of large rail-focused civil engineering projects for a main contractor. You will drive compliance with rail HS&E requirements, ISO 14001/45001, and CDM, while developing and guiding HS&E teams in a challenging environment. You will conduct investigations to identify root causes of incidents and implement improvements, and deliver training to employees and subcontractors. You will collaborate with clients, stakeholders, and supply chains to embed a proactive safety culture and ensure regulatory alignment.

Responsibilities

• Oversee HS&E on large rail-focused civil engineering projects
• Lead and develop HS&E teams in a multi-discipline construction environment
• Conduct accident/incident investigations and determine root causes
• Ensure compliance with H&S and Environmental legislation and implement standards (ISO 14001/45001)
• Perform internal audits (IIRCA) and support RISQS auditing where relevant
• Deliver HS&E training to employees and sub-contractors
• Collaborate with client teams, stakeholders, and supply chain to maintain safety standards and CDM compliance

Key requirements

• CMIOSH ( Chartered H&S professional)
• In-depth knowledge of Rail HS&E requirements
• Experience leading HS&E in rail construction and major multi-discipline projects
• Accident/incident investigation experience and root cause analysis
• Thorough knowledge of H&S and Environmental statutory legislation
• IIRCA certified internal auditor (HS&E)
• Thorough knowledge of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001
• Ability to collaborate with teams, clients, stakeholders and supply chain
• Knowledge of the CDM regulation
• Ability to lead HS&E teams in challenging environments
• Effective communication at all levels
