Associate – Power Systems

Overview

As an Associate Electrical Engineer at HDR in Glasgow, you will help transform power infrastructure for major clients, from concept to completion. You will guide multi-disciplinary teams, deliver detailed designs, and drive innovative solutions for renewable integration, energy storage, and large-load connections. You’ll work closely with an integrated HDR power group and benefit from global resources while shaping local operations. Responsibilities

• Lead project and package delivery by defining briefs, technical requirements, and scopes of work, including cost planning and deliverables (reports, specs, drawings)
• Drive projects from concept to detailed design with regular reviews and cross-disciplinary collaboration
• Develop and maintain electrical network models and deliver power system analyses
• Provide technical leadership across feasibility, detailed design, commissioning and operation
• Support renewable integration, energy storage, electrification, and large-load connections with impact assessment and mitigation
• Ensure compliance with transmission and distribution codes, standards, and utility requirements
• Maintain high technical standards through in-house design reviews and quality checks
• Foster strong client relationships to encourage repeat business and manage expectations
• Contribute to business development and market expansion through opportunities and presentations
• Lead and mentor teams, set objectives, monitor progress, and coach staff
• Oversee progress, manage design variations, and support budget control with Project Lead collaboration
• Champion QA systems and procedures to ensure project excellence and safety compliance
• Uphold ISO 9001 and 14001 standards across projects
• Promote a culture of safety in line with CDM regulations
• Collaborate with a broad team within HDR’s global network

Key requirements

• Bachelor in Electrical Engineering; Master’s desirable
• Chartered status preferred
• Minimum 10 years in power system studies with HV switchyard/substation, renewable, or thermal projects
• Strong knowledge of physical, electrical, civil, and structural design components
• Experience with UK Grid Code and key standards (BSI, ENA, IEC, IEEE, CIGRE)
• Proven ability to lead electrical system studies across project stages
• Ability to coordinate across stakeholders and disciplines
• Extensive experience in load flow, short circuit, harmonics, power quality, arc flash, stability studies
• Experience with DIgSILENT, IPSA, ETAP (or similar); dynamic studies (DIgSILENT) essential; EMT studies (PSCAD) desirable
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
