Senior Science Writer

Overview

In this role you craft engaging science content across blogs, social media and long-form features, shaping how frontier biology is shared with diverse audiences. You lead strategic planning for the Institute’s communications, collaborating with the team to highlight people, data and technologies behind cutting-edge research. You’ll build relationships with internal teams and external partners to support recruitment, stakeholder communication and research strategies. The role offers the chance to influence public understanding of genomics and contribute to Wellcome Sanger’s mission through compelling storytelling.

Responsibilities

• Lead content planning and publishing for the Sanger Institute blog and other channels
• Create a mix of short social media posts and long-form feature articles
• Develop pitches for journalists and produce publications, reports, and intranet content
• Foster and maintain relationships with internal teams, collaborators, and external partners
• Coordinate with contractors and manage multiple concurrent projects under tight deadlines
• Support recruitment efforts and provide clear, accurate scientific communications

Key requirements

• Clear, accurate scientific writing experience
• Scientific degree or demonstrable understanding of biology
• Experience writing blogs, media releases, social media, and web content
• Experience using content management systems to publish content
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Ability to influence and negotiate with managers at all levels
• Ability to coordinate with external and internal contractors
• Strong information gathering and problem solving skills
• Ability to manage high-volume workload with conflicting priorities
