Lawyer – Litigation

Overview

In this role you will specialise in debt-focused litigation within the Council’s Legal Services. You will work closely with client departments to recover debts, handle civil and criminal advocacy, and progress cases with limited supervision. You will contribute to service improvement and ensure high professional standards, including Lexcel compliance. This is a chance to shape local authority debt recovery and broader litigation work while maintaining a healthy work-life balance through flexible and remote arrangements.

Responsibilities

• Manage moderately complex litigation casework focused on debt recovery
• Advise client departments and draft court documents
• Undertake appropriate court hearings with limited supervision
• Conduct advocacy in civil and criminal matters
• Deliver on key projects to improve service delivery
• Maintain Lexcel quality standards
• Participate in in-service training and develop staff/client department capabilities
• Handle confidential data securely

Key requirements

• Solicitor, Fellow of CILEX with litigation/advocacy rights, or Barrister with practising certificate authorised to litigate
• Comprehensive understanding of debt recovery and civil litigation
• Attention to detail and ability to delegate to generate capacity
• Effective time management and ability to work under pressure
• Clear communication skills across verbal, digital, and written media
• Clean current driving licence for court attendance
