Prototype Build Engineer

Overview

In this role you will lead the end-to-end delivery of prototype and rolling chassis assets, ensuring builds are safe, on time and to exact specifications. You’ll act as the engineering lead in the prototype workshop, coordinating cross-functional teams to translate requirements into executable build plans for low-volume, high-performance vehicles. You’ll drive build quality, resolve issues, and maintain robust build standards across all phases. This is a hands-on, leadership-focused opportunity in a fast-paced engineering environment that fuels development and vehicle maturity.

Responsibilities

• Lead the physical build, assembly, commissioning and sign-off of prototype vehicles.
• Own vehicle delivery from build initiation to workshop completion, audit and customer handover.
• Develop and maintain detailed build plans aligned with programme timing and development needs.
• Coordinate workshop activities to meet build schedules safely and to required quality standards.
• Manage build resource requirements including technicians and workshop facilities.
• Drive regular build reviews and prioritisation to meet programme milestones.
• Provide technical leadership to prototype build technicians across all build phases.
• Support technicians with complex assembly activities and engineering concerns.
• Ensure adherence to build standards, processes, specifications and safe systems of work.
• Promote a culture of excellence, accountability and continuous improvement within the workshop.

Key requirements

• Proven experience leading prototype builds and coordinating workshop activities.
• Strong technical leadership and ability to guide build technicians.
• Experience resolving build issues and supporting engineering changes.
• Ability to develop and maintain detailed build plans and manage resources.
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes, safety standards and quality controls.
• Familiarity with DFMEA, cross-functional engineering reviews and product maturity activities.
• Experience with parts planning, logistics coordination and documentation control.
