Security & Protection Specialist

Overview

In this Security & Protection Specialist role, you will lead security management across council premises and public events to protect staff, members and communities. You’ll set strategic direction, provide expert advice, and coordinate with property teams, emergency services and elected members. The role focuses on implementing Martyn’s Law, leading risk assessments and incident investigations, and driving continuous security improvements. You will work closely with cross‑functional teams to shape a secure, safe environment for public services to thrive. This is a high‑impact position in a public sector setting with a clear mission to enhance protective security and resilience.

Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate security management across council premises and public events
• Plan and oversee security at public meetings and manage risk assessments
• Lead implementation of the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act (Martyn’s Law) and advise service areas
• Oversee recording and investigation of security incidents
• Advise on physical and procedural security controls and monitor security providers
• Collaborate with Health, Safety & Wellbeing colleagues, and maintain relationships with police and emergency services
• Contribute to integrated risk management and drive security testing and audits to improve practice

Key requirements

• Strong background in security risk management, policing, protective services, or event/crowd safety environments
• Confident, proactive, calm under pressure with relationship-building and influencing skills
• Solid understanding of terrorism protection measures and practical security controls
• Sound judgement, integrity and excellent communication skills
• Highly organized, solutions-focused and committed to continuous improvement
• Ability to lead, advise and drive security improvements for people, premises and public services
