Consultant – Manager, Data Engineer, AI & Data, Defense & Security

Overview

In this Data Engineer role you will design and build data pipelines and platforms to transform high-volume, sensitive data for Defence & Security clients. You will work within Deloitte’s Engineering, AI and Data team to deliver scalable, governed data assets for analytics, AI, reporting and operational use. The role spans discovery, architecture, engineering and delivery in secure environments, with an emphasis on collaboration and practical problem-solving. You will contribute to client delivery and practice development while advancing secure data solutions that support mission-critical needs.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain data pipelines, stores and products
• Ingest, transform, enrich and integrate diverse data sources (structured, semi-structured, streaming, unstructured)
• Create trusted, standardized data assets for analytics, AI, reporting and operations
• Collaborate with engineers, data scientists, analysts, architects and clients to deliver scalable data solutions
• Apply engineering best practices (version control, testing, automation, CI/CD, documentation)
• Design secure, reliable, scalable data architectures
• Support data governance (metadata, quality, lineage, access control, handling of sensitive data)
• Monitor, troubleshoot and optimize data systems for performance and reliability
• Bring innovation to complex data engineering challenges
• Contribute to client delivery, stakeholder relationships and future propositions

Key requirements

• Hands-on experience designing, building and maintaining data pipelines, ETL/ELT or orchestration workflows
• Proficient coding in Python, Scala, Java or equivalent with strong SQL
• Experience with diverse data sources and data types (batch, streaming, structured, semi-structured, unstructured)
• Understanding of data modelling, database design, data warehousing or lakehouse patterns
• Experience with software engineering practices (version control, testing, reusable code, documentation, CI/CD)
• Ability to design scalable, reliable, performant data solutions
• Understanding of data security, access control, data quality, metadata, lineage and governance
• Strong communication skills to translate user/business needs into technical data solutions
• Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and build client relationships
