Lead Senior Civil Engineer

Overview

As Lead Senior Civil Engineer, you will technically lead railway structure assessments and designs within the CAFA team, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance. You’ll work with cross-functional colleagues to deliver high-quality outputs and mentor junior staff. The role combines on-site leadership with office-based design and reporting, contributing to Amey’s safety-focused, client-oriented projects. You will shape the delivery of complex asset assessments and support professional development across the team.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and check technical assessment remits, calculations, reports, and drawings to meet standards and client needs
• Lead on-site inspections and technical leadership for assets when required
• Maintain high technical standards aligned with project specs and Amey’s IMS/HSEQ requirements
• Provide mentorship and supervision to junior staff in drawings, reports, calculations
• Support training and development programs to achieve professional qualifications
• Engage with clients and third parties to maintain strong working relationships
• Ensure health, safety, environmental compliance including CDM within CAFA structures assessments
• Assist in cost estimation and delivery of commissions to programme, budget, and client requirements

Key requirements

• Extensive experience in railway structure inspection, assessment and design
• Strong track record in designing/assessing major construction materials (historical materials incl. cast iron, wrought iron)
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or working towards, via ICE/CIHT/IStructE
• Proficiency with industry design/analysis software (see tools)
• Experience leading teams to produce contract deliverables on time and within quality expectations
• Knowledge of health, safety, environmental, and sustainability legislation
• Exposure to Network Rail, Local Authorities, and principal contractors
• Ability to work in a hybrid setting and in a client-focused environment
