Mechanical Engineer

Overview

In this role you will contribute to the safe operation and refit of nuclear submarines by developing and validating mechanical designs for submarine reactor plant interfaces. You’ll work within the Nuclear Steam Raising Plant Interface Equipment team at Devonport, collaborating across disciplines in a highly regulated environment. You will progress designs from concept to implementation and provide technical guidance to meet standards and regulatory requirements. This position offers hybrid working, strong engineering growth, and the opportunity to directly impact national defence through high‑complexity systems.

Responsibilities

• Produce design documentation and technical assessments to support projects
• Develop designs across the full lifecycle from concept to implementation
• Provide technical advice to ensure compliance with standards and legislation
• Support design reviews, hazard studies and engineering analyses
• Collaborate with engineering teams to meet project schedules and budgets

Key requirements

• Understanding of mechanical engineering principles, especially in pressure systems or pipework design
• Knowledge of the engineering design lifecycle and processes
• Awareness of relevant engineering legislation, standards and regulatory requirements
• Experience with CAD, fluid systems, or engineering analysis (desirable)
• Strong problem-solving, communication and organisational skills
• Security clearance: sole UK National able to obtain NNPI clearance
