As a Software Development Engineer II in Tesco’s Behavioural Data Platform, you design and build high-performance, event-driven backend services that process behavioural data for millions of users. You’ll work in a collaborative, self-organising team to enable real-time, personalised experiences and data-driven decisions. The role offers hands-on growth with Java/Spring Boot, distributed systems, and modern tooling at scale, shaping systems that power analytics and customer experiences. Responsibilities
- Develop features for a backend event-driven platform using Java and Spring Boot
- Pair with senior engineers to design, implement, test, and ship code
- Learn to use observability tools (New Relic, Splunk) to monitor live systems
- Participate in planning sessions to understand requirements and contribute ideas
- Write automated test suites to ensure code correctness and maintainability
- Collaborate with teammates to review code and improve development practices
- Develop an understanding of distributed systems, data processing at scale, and performance optimisation
- Create, maintain, and deploy applications using CI/CD pipelines
- Gain hands-on experience with Kafka, Kubernetes, and managing distributed services
Key requirements
- A working knowledge of Java and an interest in backend development
- Familiarity with object-oriented programming principles
- Some practical experience building event-driven services and/or REST APIs
- A willingness to learn and collaborate in a team environment
