Software Engineering Manager – Hands-On & Product-Focused

Overview

In this hands-on Engineering Manager role, you will lead a small, autonomous team to build the Close product from discovery to delivery, using AI to automate reconciliation tasks. You stay hands-on in code and AI workflows while shaping the product direction and engaging with customers. You’ll influence how a lean, AI-native team operates and ships in small, impactful increments. This is a unique opportunity to tackle end-of-month closing challenges at scale and across US and European operations.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a two-engineer team, staying hands-on while guiding direction, mentoring, and removing blockers
• Own a substantial portion of the Close product end-to-end from discovery to delivery
• Engage directly with customers and accountants, running discovery, demos, and translating feedback into features
• Contribute to codebase and AI workflows, shipping functional AI-driven solutions
• Investigate accounting processes (payroll, invoices, expenses, reconciliation) across regions to identify AI-driven improvements
• Report progress to stakeholders in a minimally structured environment
• Define operating model for a small, autonomous, AI-native team that could be scaled internally

Key requirements

• Hands-on engineering ability with code and AI workflows
• People-management or team-leadership experience with coaching and growth of two engineers
• Extreme autonomy with ability to make decisions with incomplete information
• Product instincts and comfort in talking to customers, running discovery, and live demos
• Explicit enthusiasm for AI as a core part of building and work, not just a tool
• Willingness to delve into accounting topics (payroll, reconciliation, regional differences)
• Bias to ship with incremental delivery and public iteration
