Senior Consultant: Local Government – Flood Risk Management and Sustainable Drainage

Overview

In this role you will lead and contribute to flood risk and drainage-focused projects for Local Authorities, delivering sophisticated flood risk assessments, drainage strategies, and sustainable drainage master-planning. You’ll mentor junior colleagues, manage project delivery, and help secure new work while collaborating across disciplines. You join a nationally coordinated Sustainable Water Management team that values development and impactful, well-communicated solutions. Your work supports planning consent and flood resilience across water environments.

Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality technical outputs and act as reviewer/approver to clients
• Mentor junior staff and oversee small project teams
• Direct and balance project scope, schedule, budget, and quality
• Pursue opportunities to win new projects or extend existing ones
• Coordinate multidisciplinary, client-facing project meetings
• Promote safe working practices and champion health and safety
• Support planning for Local Authority flood management initiatives
• Contribute to flood risk assessments and drainage strategies for development planning

Key requirements

• Experience delivering Local Authority flood risk services (SUDS, SFRM Plans, SFRA, flood investigations, planning support)
• Proven ability to deliver Flood Risk Assessments and Drainage Strategies for planning applications
• Budget awareness and leadership of project delivery
• Knowledge of FRM Act, NPF4, SEPA guidance, and local authority policies
• Mentoring experience and capability to develop junior staff
• Strong technical report writing and review skills
• Confident in presenting and leading client meetings
• Chartered status with C.WEM, CEnv, CSci or CEng or evidence of working towards this
