Consultant in Psychiatry of Learning Disability (Adult)

Overview

In this role you will be a senior clinical lead within Powys Learning Disabilities Services, guiding day-to-day clinical decisions and supporting colleagues. You will work with cross‑functional teams to deliver high-quality community care, while contributing to teaching and research. The role offers a chance to shape service development within a supportive, progressive NHS board set in rural Wales. You will influence clinical governance and strategy to improve patient outcomes and service delivery.

Responsibilities

• Provide effective clinical leadership to all staff in the specialty
• Offer expert advice to team members on day-to-day management of learning disability clients
• Maintain a first-class clinical service
• Sustain and develop teaching and research where appropriate
• Operate in line with Health Board procedures and service plans
• Contribute to business planning and development strategies for the specialty
• Collaborate with clinical, medical, and managerial colleagues to deliver high-quality healthcare
• Support on-call duties and travel requirements as needed

Key requirements

• Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practise
• On Specialist Register/SpR due to obtain CCST within 6 months of interview
• PALS or APLS provider
• NALS provider
• Broad-based psychiatry experience including Learning Disability
• Knowledge of UK hospital systems or equivalent
• Commitment to CPD and safeguarding procedures (vulnerable adults and children)
• Competence in Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act
• Safe and effective written and verbal communication skills
• Experience in clinical audit and understanding its role in practice
• Experience with critical appraisal of evidence
• Experience organizing teaching for medical students and junior doctors
• Knowledge of NHS management and structure
• Ability to fulfil on-call duties and travel requirements
• Immigration status, health clearance, DBS/ISA checks
• UK professional registration in current valid status
