Overview
In this role you will deliver complex HVAC and HVDC cable systems for Scotland’s energy projects, joining a growing expert team across Glasgow, Edinburgh or Perth. You’ll work within WSP’s UK and global Energy business to support transmission, renewable energy and interconnectors, helping Scotland progress toward Net Zero. You will engage with multidisciplinary teams and use advanced analyses to shape cable design and implementation. Responsibilities
- Design and develop HV and EHV cable systems for power transmission and distribution projects, including cable selection, accessories, installation methodologies and system architecture.
- Conduct cable system studies and technical assessments (ratings, thermal analyses, performance) using CYMCAP and related tools.
- Produce engineering deliverables, specifications, reports and design documentation to support project delivery.
- Support HVAC and HVDC cable solutions for onshore, offshore and interconnector projects.
- Perform route, site and installation assessments with environmental and constructability considerations.
- Ensure designs comply with industry standards, client specifications, safety and environmental regulations.
- Collaborate with project managers, construction teams, manufacturers, contractors and clients to deliver projects.
- Review design modifications and provide technical support through manufacturing, installation, testing and commissioning.
Key requirements
- Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or related discipline.
- Proven experience in HV and EHV cable systems design, specification, manufacture, testing and implementation; HVDC exposure is advantageous.
- Strong understanding of cable design, ampacity, rating studies, thermal assessments and installation methodologies (CYMCAP).
- Experience with major transmission/distribution projects, renewables, offshore wind connections, interconnectors or similar.
- Knowledge of IEC standards, CIGRE guidance and related specifications.
- Experience FAT, site testing, installation supervision, commissioning and witnessing cable operations.
- Ability to provide technical leadership within multidisciplinary teams; client and stakeholder engagement.
- Willingness to travel across the UK and abroad; Chartered Engineer status or progress toward it; National Grid BP141 authorisation desirable.
