Overview
In this Senior Tax Manager role you will lead and shape the Tax function, building depth and capability while maintaining strong commercial ownership. You’ll work closely with senior leadership to set strategy, grow the team, and deliver high-quality, advisory tax guidance for owner-managed and founder-led hospitality clients. The position offers autonomy to design scalable operating models and to drive cross-departmental value through proactive tax initiatives. You will be a trusted adviser who balances technical mastery with business judgement to impact profitability and client relationships.
Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the Tax team, building capability and succession.
- Set clear responsibilities and delegate work appropriately.
- Coach and develop team members with increasing exposure to technical work, advisory, and client ownership.
- Identify recruitment, training, and development needs.
- Build a scalable operating model for growing the department.
- Own senior client relationships and advise high-profile clients.
- Lead complex client conversations and provide practical, commercially focused advice.
- Identify advisory opportunities across the client base and collaborate with other departments.
- Own scoping, pricing, and fee agreements for Tax advisory work.
- Manage Tax WIP, recovery and profitability; monitor scope creep and fee variations.
- Support new-business discussions requiring senior Tax input.
- Act as senior technical escalation point and review complex Tax work.
- Provide oversight across Corporation Tax, Personal Tax, SEIS/EIS, share schemes, and cross-border matters.
- Coordinate with external specialists for international matters and deeper expertise.
- Maintain professional and technical review standards.
- Provide senior oversight of bookkeeping and Company Secretarial activities.
- Collaborate with Management Accounts and other departments to improve cross-department quality.
- Escalate upstream accounting or Tax-affecting information issues early.
- Identify and develop opportunities across the wider client base.
Key requirements
- CTA qualified, or equivalent senior Tax experience
- Senior Tax Manager experience in an accountancy or professional services environment
- Strong advisory capability for owner-managed and entrepreneurial businesses
- Broad experience across mixed Tax with solid Corporation Tax knowledge
- Comfortable reviewing complex work and serving as a senior technical escalation point
- Commercially confident with client discussions on scope and fees
- Experience with WIP, recovery, and profitability metrics
- Proven ability to develop, coach, and delegate to junior team members
- Ability to collaborate with external specialists rather than needing to own all expertise
