Commercial Director

Overview

In this role you will lead the commercial function for the earthworks contracting business, safeguarding margin, cash flow and contract positions from tender to final account. You will shape commercial strategy, direct estimating and bid processes, and oversee contract administration while managing risk across projects. You will present forecasts to the Board, negotiate major subcontract packages, settle final accounts and resolve disputes. You will mentor a high‑performing team and set reporting standards, representing the business to clients and supply‑chain partners. This is a growth role in a respected earthworks division within a long‑established construction group.

Responsibilities

• Lead the commercial function from tender through final account
• Own commercial strategy and oversee estimating and bid processes
• Oversee contract administration under NEC and JCT forms
• Manage commercial risk across all projects
• Review CVRs and forecasts for Board presentation
• Negotiate major subcontract packages and settle final accounts
• Resolve disputes and manage relationships with clients, consultants and suppliers
• Develop and mentor a high-performing commercial team
• Establish commercial policies and reporting standards
• Represent the business as a senior commercial contact with key stakeholders

Key requirements

• Substantial senior commercial experience in earthworks, groundworks, civil engineering or bulk materials handling
• Degree in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering or related discipline
• MCIOB or MRICS desirable
• Proven track record managing multi‑million‑pound portfolios
• Strong knowledge of NEC3/NEC4 and JCT contracts
• Excellent analytical, negotiation and leadership skills
• Confidence influencing at Board level; resilience under pressure; sound risk judgement
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel
