Senior Biomedical Scientist – Cytopathology

Overview

In this role you lead the Diagnostic Cytopathology section, guiding ROSE and telecytology services across complex sites within the lab. You will supervise staff, ensure timely, high-quality results, and drive quality and accreditation initiatives. Working with the Cellular Pathology team, you’ll optimise workflows, training, and competency, while supporting clinical teams to enable rapid diagnosis and treatment. Responsibilities

• Provide expert ROSE and telecytology, including EBUS, EUS and head and neck procedures; assess adequacy and direct material for ancillary testing
• Lead day-to-day Diagnostic Cytopathology service with advanced specimen assessment, preparation and processing
• Supervise, train and support staff, including competency assessment, appraisals, rotas and workforce planning
• Ensure accurate, timely results and escalate unexpected findings, risks or delays
• Collaborate with Consultant Biomedical Scientist, histopathologists and clinical teams; deputise for senior colleagues when required
• Contribute to UKAS accreditation and ISO 15189 compliance; service development and introduction of new techniques
• Promote quality, safety and continuous improvement across the service

Key requirements

• Biomedical Science degree or equivalent
• HCPC registration
• MSc or equivalent
• IBMS Membership
• IBMS Specialist Diploma
• ROSE experience
• Experience in cytopathology supervision and training
• Experience with quality management systems and NHS IT systems
• Post-registration NHS laboratory experience
