Software Development Engineer II

Overview

In this role you design and operate high-throughput backend services for scalable, accurate pricing experiences. You work with cross-functional teams to build reliable microservices, optimize performance, and integrate AI/ML-enabled solutions. The position sits within Expedia’s Pricing pillar, which aims to provide clear, localised pricing that delights customers while meeting regulatory norms. Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain high-throughput, low-latency backend services for pricing at scale
• Implement caching to improve performance and resource utilization
• Participate in system, API design, and data modeling for scalable microservices
• Contribute to technical documentation, code reviews, and architecture discussions
• Analyze complex problems and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver sustainable solutions
• Safely integrate and operate AI/ML-enabled solutions to improve outcomes

Key requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent professional experience
• 2+ years of relevant backend development experience
• Hands-on backend development with Java, Scala, Kotlin, or similar languages
• Experience with caching technologies (Redis, Couchbase, Memcached) and with relational and NoSQL databases
• Proven ability to conduct technical reviews and work in Agile environments
• Experience designing and operating distributed, event-driven systems using Kafka Streams or AWS Kinesis
• Proven ability to optimize microservices for low-latency, high-throughput processing
