Head of Quality Assurance (12 month FTC) | London | Hybrid

I’m working with a large, international consumer organisation that’s going through a significant technology transformation and they’re now looking for a Head of Quality Engineering to help shape what quality looks like at enterprise level.
This is not a traditional QA leadership role.
You’ll have ownership across Quality Engineering strategy, automation, test environments, test data, engineering standards and the adoption of AI within the testing lifecycle.
The goal is simple: build a modern, automation-first quality function that helps engineering teams move faster without compromising reliability, security or customer experience.
What you’ll be doing
- Own the organisation-wide Quality Engineering strategy and roadmap
- Define the operating model across QE, SDET and test environment capabilities
- Embed automated testing throughout CI/CD and modern DevOps environments
- Improve approaches to test environments and test data
- Introduce practical, governed use cases for AI-assisted testing and quality engineering
- Establish meaningful quality metrics, governance and release assurance
- Work closely with Engineering, Product, Architecture, Platform, Security and Data leadership
- Build, develop and scale a high-performing QE function
- Own budgets, suppliers, tooling and investment decisions
- Act as a senior technical voice on quality, engineering risk and release confidence
What I’m looking for
Someone who has operated at enterprise QE / Software Quality leadership level and has experience transforming the way large engineering organisations approach quality.
You’ll ideally bring:
- Significant leadership experience across Quality Engineering / Software Quality
- Strong experience with automation, continuous testing and CI/CD
- Experience leading QEs, SDETs and/or automation specialists
- Good understanding of cloud, DevOps and DevSecOps
- Experience across test environments and test data
- Knowledge of non-functional areas such as performance, security, accessibility and resilience
- Experience using AI to improve engineering or testing practices
- Strong stakeholder management and executive-level communication
- Commercial experience across budgets, suppliers and technology investment
- A genuine interest in developing people and building engineering capability
This would suit someone who enjoys operating at the intersection of technology strategy, engineering excellence and people leadership rather than simply running a testing function.
