Management Accountant

Overview

As a senior member of the Finance team, you will lead financial management across a major service area, ensuring robust financial reporting and policy direction within the NHS framework. You will develop budgets, monitoring returns, and provide strategic advice to optimise resources. You will manage the Management Accounts team, implement financial policies, and support business cases for revenue developments. This role offers scope to shape financial governance and work with cross-functional teams in a mission-driven health board.

Responsibilities

• Support the Finance Business Partner in developing financial policies and ensuring financial viability
• Lead and manage the Management Accounts team
• Monitor portfolio budgets and identify financial pressures with corrective actions
• Provide budgetary control information and data, including manpower planning
• Advise on business cases for revenue developments and financial implications of proposals
• Maintain control systems for budgets and staffing establishments
• Prepare regular financial position and performance reports for senior governance
• Forecast complex expenditures and high-value/high-risk areas (e.g., pharmacy, SLAs)
• Provide financial analysis and communication to non-finance staff and stakeholders

Key requirements

• Qualified (CCAB) Accountancy qualification
• Management accounting experience
• Significant budgetary management experience
• Judgement-based prioritisation and ability to work independently
• Desirable NHS financial management accounting systems experience
• Strong analytical and decision-making abilities
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to work autonomously and meet tight deadlines
• Knowledge of revenue budget preparation and financial reporting standards
