Overview

You will lead protection and control design for high-voltage projects, collaborating with clients and cross-functional teams to translate complex requirements into robust protection schemes. You’ll review designs, guide junior engineers, and ensure timely delivery within budget and quality standards. The role spans industrial, transmission/distribution and renewable sectors, with a focus on safety, regulatory compliance and effective problem solving. This is a chance to shape critical protection solutions at up to 400 kV and contribute to Arcadis’ sustainable buildings and energy systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design transmission protection systems up to 400 kV
  • Review in-house and external contractor designs
  • Prepare tender design man-hour estimates, deliverables lists and design programs
  • Mentor and support junior engineers on P&C tasks
  • Apply safe design and operation principles for electrical networks
  • Advise on design changes and feasibility of alternatives
  • Coordinate with internal/external parties (suppliers, service providers)
  • Ensure project delivery to time, quality and budget
  • Undertake site visits and non-intrusive surveys as needed
  • Identify and manage project risks and CDM requirements
  • Attend site meetings and interface between protection systems and plant equipment

Key requirements

  • Proven technical capability in design/application of power system protection
  • Experience with protection at transmission levels up to 400 kV preferred
  • Experience in protection deliverables, feasibility studies, programs and cost estimation
  • Ability to work with equipment suppliers, manufacturers and professional bodies
  • Experience in detailed electrical schematic diagrams for substation protection and control
  • Experience with busbar, feeder, transformer, reactor, circuit breaker protection and SCADA interface; FACTS/HVDC protections desirable
  • Protection design using conventional and non-conventional Instrument Transformers
  • Knowledge of IEC61850 protocols
  • Experience in SLD/KLD, panel layouts and cable diagrams
  • Interface engineering between protection and primary/plant equipment
  • Experience with relay coordination and short-circuit calculation tools (ASPEN OneLiner, ETAP, DIgSILENT advantageous)
  • Protection authorisation (TP141, CDAE, LCDAE) advantageous
  • SCADA system design experience (HMI Zenon/Copa-Data advantageous)
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
