Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician Tutor
Location: JTL Training Centre London South (Orpington)
Working pattern: Full time & permanent. Normal working hours are 35 per week, Monday – Friday, 09:00 – 17:00.
Salary: Up to £44,500, depending on skills and experience
Location Specific Technical Allowance: Some employees living and working within the London areas may also be eligible to receive a Location Specific Technical Allowance (£2,000 – £7,000 per annum) in line with our current policy.

About The Role
This is an exciting opportunity to use your plumbing and domestic heating industry experience to inspire and develop the next generation of skilled professionals while building a rewarding career in teaching.
The role is designed for experienced plumbing and domestic heating professionals who are looking to move into teaching, as well as tutors or trainers with up to two years’ relevant teaching experience who want to continue developing their practice. You may be completely new to teaching, newly qualified or already gaining experience within an education or training environment.
As an Early Career Plumbing Tutor, you will deliver theoretical and practical learning to apprentices undertaking the Level 2 Plumbing Operative apprenticeship and Level 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician apprenticeship. You will help apprentices build their technical knowledge, practical skills, confidence and professional behaviours, supporting them to progress and prepare for successful careers within the plumbing and domestic heating industry.
You will be supported through a structured programme of induction, professional qualifications, mentoring, coaching, observation and practical experience. The level of guidance provided will reflect your existing qualifications and experience, enabling you to develop your pedagogical knowledge, teaching skills and confidence while progressively taking greater responsibility for the progress and achievement of allocated apprentice groups.
You will:
- Complete JTL’s structured tutor induction, licence-to-practise and professional development programmes, undertaking development appropriate to your existing experience and qualifications.
- Apply your plumbing and domestic heating industry knowledge to deliver theoretical and practical teaching for apprentices undertaking the Level 2 Plumbing Operative apprenticeship and Level 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician apprenticeship.
- Deliver teaching and practical activities with a level of guidance, mentoring and oversight appropriate to your experience, progressing towards consistent and independent delivery.
- Develop and apply effective teaching practice, including lesson planning, curriculum sequencing, questioning, assessment for learning and checking apprentices’ understanding.
- Follow JTL’s centrally developed curriculum, schemes of work and learning resources, contributing to a consistent apprentice experience.
- Plan and adapt teaching to meet individual and group needs, including apprentices who require additional support or further challenge.
- Use practical demonstrations, digital learning and e-learning approaches to promote engagement, understanding and the application of technical knowledge and skills.
- Assess apprentices’ theoretical knowledge and practical skills, completing marking and assessment activity with appropriate support and moderation where required.
- Provide clear, constructive and developmental feedback that helps apprentices understand their progress and what they need to do next.
- Monitor attendance, punctuality, engagement, progress and achievement, maintaining accurate records and taking appropriate action where concerns arise.
- Work with tutors, Training Officers and other colleagues to identify apprentices who are falling behind and provide timely support and intervention.
- Take increasing responsibility for the progress and achievement of allocated apprentice groups as your confidence and competence develop.
- Promote personal development, employability skills, professional behaviours and industry awareness through teaching and JTL’s Steps to Success curriculum.
- Embed English, mathematics and digital skills within vocational teaching and practical activities.
- Promote safeguarding, Prevent, equality, diversity and inclusion, British Values and health and safety throughout delivery.
- Maintain high standards of apprentice behaviour, welfare and safe working practice within classrooms and workshops.
- Participate in lesson observations, coaching, reflective practice, quality assurance, standardisation and moderation activities.
- Maintain your technical knowledge, occupational competence and teaching practice through continuing professional development.
What we’re looking for
We are looking for an experienced plumbing and domestic heating professional who is passionate about sharing their knowledge, developing others and helping apprentices succeed.
You will bring:
- Level 3 Plumbing NVQ Qualification or equivalent.
- Where the role involves teaching or assessing gas provision, a relevant Level 3 Gas qualification and current Core Gas Safety competencies appropriate to the provision being delivered.
- Level 3 Water Regulations and Unvented Hot Water Systems qualification, or equivalent.
- Verifiable experience working within the plumbing and domestic heating industry.
- Practical experience of applying plumbing and domestic heating standards in the workplace.
- Strong technical knowledge of plumbing and domestic heating.
- A good understanding of current plumbing and domestic heating industry standards, regulations and safe working practices.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical information clearly.
- The ability and enthusiasm to engage, encourage and support others.
- Good organisational and time management skills.
- Confidence using IT systems and digital technologies.
- A willingness to receive feedback, reflect on your practice and continually improve.
- A commitment to completing the teaching, assessment and professional development requirements of the role.
It would be beneficial if you also have:
- A Level 3 environmental technology qualification.
- Relevant gas qualifications and competencies would be highly advantageous for posts that may support gas provision.
- A CSCS Card or equivalent.
- GCSE Mathematics and English at Grade 4/C or above, or equivalent.
- Level 3 Award in Education and Training, or higher.
- Level 3 Training, Assessment and Quality Assurance (TAQA) Award, A1, D32/D33 or equivalent assessor qualification.
- IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent health and safety qualification.
- First Aid or Fire Marshal training.
- A current PASMA qualification.
- Experience of coaching, instructing, mentoring or supporting others.
- Experience of delivering presentations, demonstrations or toolbox talks.
- Experience of using digital technology to present information or support learning.
You do not need to hold all of the desirable teaching and assessment qualifications before joining JTL. We will provide structured training, mentoring and support to help you complete the required qualifications and develop into a confident and effective tutor.
