Senior Platform Architect (Progress OpenEdge & Java) | Crawley – London

Overview

As Platform Architect you will define the long-term technical vision for a critical on-premise back-office platform, partnering with engineering, security, and enterprise teams. You’ll drive architecture governance, standardization, and scalable solutions that endure multi-year initiatives. You’ll lead cross‑team collaboration to raise operational maturity and security, shaping the platform to support sustainable business operations. This role offers a meaningful opportunity to influence platform strategy in a global, regulated enterprise context.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute the long-term architecture, roadmap, and technology strategy for the platform
• Provide technical leadership and governance across multiple engineering teams and applications
• Drive engineering excellence through standardization, reusable components, best practices, and operational improvements
• Lead secure, scalable, resilient, and maintainable platform design and evolution
• Act as the primary technical liaison between engineering teams and stakeholders including Architecture and Information Security
• Drive platform modernization, stability, performance, and operational maturity initiatives
• Guide complex technical decision-making and mentor senior engineers, technical leads, and architects

Key requirements

• 10+ years in software engineering, solution/ platform architecture, or technical leadership
• Strong expertise in Progress OpenEdge (ABL/OpenEdge)
• Extensive Java enterprise development experience (Spring Boot, REST, Microservices, Hibernate/JPA)
• Proven experience designing and supporting large-scale on-premise platforms
• Understanding of enterprise architecture, distributed systems, design patterns, and system integration
• Experience defining and executing large-scale, multi-year technology roadmaps
• Proven ability leading architecture initiatives across multiple teams
• Strong knowledge of security architecture, governance, risk, and compliance
• Experience driving platform standardization and continuous improvement
• Excellent stakeholder management and leadership skills
• Experience in enterprise-scale or highly regulated environments (desirable)
