Overview
As a Programmes Underwriter in the Cross-Class Portfolio, you will help deliver the divisional plan and manage a delegated authority portfolio with disciplined underwriting and data-driven oversight. You will work closely with brokers, coverholders and stakeholders to assess opportunities and monitor performance, shaping profitable growth within governance standards. You’ll apply the reinsurance strategy to protect the portfolio and contribute to market insight and best practices. This role offers exposure to a complex underwriting environment in London with a collaborative, development-focused culture. You will engage across teams to drive value for clients and Sompo’s strategic objectives.

Responsibilities
- Contribute to the divisional business plan and share insights in relevant meetings
- Promote department and company to maximise brand value and leverage
- Apply reinsurance strategy to protect the portfolio with appropriate referrals
- Underwrite within authority, ensuring regulatory and internal standards are met
- Maintain accurate recording and measurement of risks and delegated authorities
- Develop understanding of policy wordings and reinsurance requirements
- Establish technical knowledge to support senior underwriters in identifying issues and opportunities
- Build and strengthen relationships with customers, brokers, partners, and colleagues
- Underwrite risks, negotiate rates/terms, and support policy wording changes where appropriate
- Monitor portfolio progress against objectives and ensure peer review and adherence to standards
- Collaborate with team to acquire knowledge and uphold Sompo values
Key requirements
- A-level or equivalent education (preferable)
- Industry qualification such as CII (preferable)
- Experience in underwriting in a specialised/complex area (preferable)
- Experience resolving underwriting queries
- Proficient in MS Office applications, especially Excel
- Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and customer orientation skills
- Ability to analyse data and make sound underwriting decisions
- Strong attention to detail, numeracy, literacy, and organizational skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a team and manage prioritisation
- Experience with risk profiling, pricing tools and loss models
