Consultant Psychiatrist – Community Mental Health – Bridgwater

Overview

As a Consultant in Community Psychiatry, you will provide senior psychiatric input to a Bridgwater CMHT, supporting GP practices and cross-covering colleagues. You’ll lead clinical assessment, treatment, and supervision for adults with complex needs, including SMI and ADHD, while working with a multi-disciplinary team. The role offers outpatient, domiciliary, and on-call duties, with a focus on smooth transitions between community and inpatient care. You will help shape community mental health services in the Bridgwater catchment and contribute to a patient-centered, coordinated care approach.

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive psychiatric assessments and treatment for patients directly or via supervision of team members
• Manage a caseload including SMI, complex cases with comorbidity, ADHD, and high-risk patients
• Offer clinical leadership and advisory input to the CMHT
• Possibly join senior on-call rota (1 in 11) with RC duties for in-patient wards
• Attend weekly CMHT MDT and maintain liaison with inpatient teams
• Participate in MHA assessments, including 136 at Place of Safety and custody settings when agreed
• Collaborate with Home Treatment Teams and various CMHS hubs to ensure smooth admissions and discharges
• Support medical staff in safeguarding high-quality practice and governance

Key requirements

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• Mental Health Act Approved Clinician / Section 12 approval
• GMC Specialist Register entry or within 6 months of CCT/CESR
• MRCPsych
• 3 years supervised ST4-6 level training and consultant-level experience
• Experience in front-line adult psychiatry and ADHD assessment/management
• Ability to work with limited supervision, lead service development, and understand clinical governance
