Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist – Luton CMHT (South)

Overview

In this role you will provide consultant leadership within the Luton CMHT, guiding care for adults with acute and severe mental illness in the community. You will work within an MDT to ensure timely, recovery‑oriented assessment and treatment, both CPA and non‑CPA, across primary care networks. You will lead clinical care, advise primary care physicians, and drive service development toward accreditation and quality targets. This is about shaping community mental health services with a patient‑centred approach and cross‑functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Provide consultant leadership to the Luton CMHT
• Conduct comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and management of adults with acute and severe mental illness in the community
• Lead weekly MDT meetings and coordinate with the team operations lead
• Offer clinical advice to primary care physicians to manage patients in the least restrictive environment
• Apply recovery‑oriented care and place service users at the centre of planning
• Fulfil responsibilities as a Psychiatrist approved under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act 1983 when relevant
• Support KPI achievement in collaboration with the Team manager
• Provide training and support to other health professionals and service users along the care pathway
• Lead on delivery of high‑quality care and monitor quality targets
• Develop the service with the aim of achieving HTAS accreditation at the earliest opportunity

Key requirements

• Fully registered with the General Medical Council
• Eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register (or Specialist Registrar within 6 months of gaining CCT at interview)
• Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent
• Eligible for Section 12 Approval/Approved Clinician or willing to apply once in post
• Desirable: higher degree (MD or PhD)
• Experience of clinical work in Acute Adult Psychiatry at SpR/SASG or consultant level within the last 3 years
• Excellent knowledge and application of the Mental Health Act
• Desirable: experience in service development and introducing new services in mental health
• Essential teaching experience and communication skills for junior staff and students
• Experience of working in a multi‑disciplinary team and providing team leadership
• Expertise in risk assessment and therapeutic risk taking
• Leadership and management experience within a multidisciplinary/ multi‑model team
• Audit and research experience; familiarity with general hospital patient care and medically unexplained symptoms
• Desirable: medical education qualification
