Design Lead Engineer – Municipal Roads & Highways

Overview

In this role you lead the design and delivery of municipal road and transportation projects within the GTA, applying TAC and municipal standards. You’ll mentor engineers, drive multi-disciplinary workstreams, and manage client relations and project performance. You’ll shape technical solutions, contribute to business development, and ensure high-quality outcomes. This is a partnership-focused leadership position within a collaborative infrastructure team that supports growth and innovation.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical guidance and support for roadway design, delivery, and construction across projects
• Lead the development and execution of Municipal Roadway and Transportation Engineering projects
• Manage day-to-day project operations, guiding design processes and reviewing deliverables
• Perform QA/QC design reviews and roadside safety audits
• Lead design development from functional studies to detailed design for transportation projects
• Oversee multidisciplinary projects from rehabilitation to expansion, coordinating with stakeholders and subconsultants
• Coordinate with other technical disciplines to ensure integrated engineering solutions
• Assist in business development, including proposals, work plans, and schedules
• Prepare technical reports and ensure quality and technical excellence in deliverables
• Stay updated on transportation planning trends to provide state-of-the-art services
• Nurture client and industry partner relationships to support growth
• Mentor junior staff and contribute to team development

Key requirements

• University degree in Civil/Transportation Engineering
• P.Eng. licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO)
• 12+ years of transportation engineering experience with at least 5 years in project management
• Expert knowledge of federal, provincial, and municipal design standards and practices
• Advanced knowledge of roadway/highway/transit design, construction, maintenance, and traffic operations
• Working knowledge of geotechnical, pavement, drainage, structural, and related fields
• Proficiency in Civil3D, AutoCAD, OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, AutoTurn
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects within budget and schedule constraints
• Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
