Lead Software Engineer – Secure Environment

Overview

You will design, build and scale secure backend platforms for National Security and Defence clients. In this role you contribute to cloud-based systems using a mix of commercial and open-source tech, across private and public environments. You work with cross-functional teams in an Agile setting to deliver features that satisfy functional and non-functional needs, frequently releasing to maintain momentum. You own production services, optimise CI/CD pipelines and uphold strong engineering fundamentals. This opportunity combines hands-on development with security-conscious, scalable software delivery in a mission-driven context.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, deploy and improve backend services and platforms
• Deliver features meeting functional and non-functional requirements
• Estimate and shape user stories within an Agile team
• Ship small, frequent releases to maintain momentum
• Collaborate with engineers in cross‑functional teams
• Build, optimise and run CI/CD pipelines
• Own and support services in production

Key requirements

• 5+ years’ experience delivering production‑grade cloud solutions
• Strong Java experience with exposure to Kotlin or Scala
• Experience with Kafka or similar messaging platforms
• Background in Agile DevSecOps environments and Zero Trust architectures
• Experience integrating with PostgreSQL, Redis and S3
• Solid engineering fundamentals: clean code, testing, documentation, code reviews and continuous delivery
• Comfortable using GitHub, GitLab and Atlassian tools
• Strong TDD experience
• Hands‑on experience with microservices and distributed systems
• Exposure to Big Data technologies
