Job Title: Locum Consultant Breast Surgeon

Start Date: TBC

Contract Type: Fixed term

Duration: 6 months

Purpose: Long Term Sick Leave

This post is appointed on a fixed‑term basis for the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose of the post is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum.

Responsibilities

• To flexibly respond to the pressures and needs of the services, and to fulfil duties of the agreed weekly job plan.
• Maintain the highest standards of management of breast conditions and disease.
• To attend and contribute to multi‑disciplinary meetings of various types as appropriate.
• Wherever possible, emergency breast referrals are managed within the breast unit, during office hours. There is no requirement to participate in the General Surgery out of hours on call rota.

What We’re Looking For

• Responsibility for providing high‑quality training within the breast unit alongside colleagues and clinical leads.
• Responsibility for the training and supervision of junior medical staff, devoting time to this activity on a regular basis.
• All clinicians are expected to actively support ongoing research themes and projects, including recruitment to clinical trials, even though there is no formal research component in this role.
• Up to date with Good Clinical Practice and regularly engage with our dedicated Clinical Trials Team.

Qualifications, Training and Experience

Essential Criteria

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• GMC registration with a licence to practise
• Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
• An appropriate higher general surgery qualification (e.g. FRCS)
• Participation in appraisal and revalidation
• Experience in breast surgery
• Experience in Surgical aspects of Breast Screening
• Experience in Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery
• Commitment to working within National Guidelines for Breast Cancer Management
• Experience in the management of breast disease

Desirable Criteria

• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via (A) – CCT or CESR (CP) – proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview or – CESR or – European Community Rights
• Evidence of participation in research and service development
• Membership of the Association of Breast Surgery
• Membership of other relevant subspecialty associations
• Specialist breast surgery qualification
• Postgraduate degree
• Oncoplastic Fellowship or equivalent
