Senior Field Engineer (Telecoms)

Overview

In this role you guide the planning, delivery and cost-effective operation of SP Energy Networks’ telecoms infrastructure. You will act as the delivery authority, coordinating with internal stakeholders and telecom providers to meet service requests on time. You’ll manage telecom projects (Adds, Moves, Changes) to ensure delivery aligns with design and standards, while maintaining safety and quality. The position offers cross-functional collaboration, field and site work, and the opportunity to impact national energy transmission through robust telecoms networks.

Responsibilities

• Oversee safe, timely delivery of telecom projects and field activities
• Review site safety and working practices by contractors; validate plans and issue work instructions
• Monitor build and civil works to meet standards; approve CHG requests and validate network records
• Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure customer-focused delivery
• Support forecast, budgeting, and expenditure tracking (CAPEX/OPEX) for projects
• Manage field service provision to support operational telecom requirements
• Conduct regular site visits and audits to ensure delivery aligns with scope

Key requirements

• Proven project management experience in a utility operational telecom network
• Strong technical background in IP networking (LAN/WAN, firewall)
• Experience with HSSEQ standards and telecom technologies (fibre, copper, microwave, cellular)
• Knowledge of MPLS-IP/ MPLS-TP, PDH/SDH, IP telephony, and network timing (SyncE, ToD, NTP)
• Understanding of telecom power (−48V DC, batteries, UPS)
• Stakeholder management and ability to influence across departments
• Proficiency in MS Office; experience with Visio and MS Project
• Experience with operational telecom networks
