Principal Mechanical Engineer

Overview

In this role you will lead mechanical design work for water and wastewater projects across the UK, from concept through construction. You will operate within a multidisciplinary team to deliver pumping stations, treatment works and related systems, ensuring designs meet client needs and project constraints. You’ll mentor junior engineers, coordinate with stakeholders, and contribute to bid and delivery activities. This is a hands-on position at a growing engineering firm with a clear focus on infrastructure in the water sector. You will shape practical, cost-effective solutions that support project success and client satisfaction.

Responsibilities

• Lead and deliver mechanical designs across feasibility, outline and detailed design stages
• Produce and review engineering calculations, drawings, technical reports and specifications
• Develop cost-effective, high-quality engineering solutions aligned with client requirements
• Coordinate with clients, stakeholders and site teams throughout project delivery
• Mentor and support junior engineers and technicians
• Assist with project planning, resource allocation and budget management
• Support bid activities, site inspections and occasional construction-stage activities

Key requirements

• Experience delivering mechanical design solutions within the water or wastewater industry
• Knowledge of pumping stations, treatment processes and associated mechanical equipment
• AutoCAD 2D proficiency
• Experience using pump selection and pump calculation software
• Ability to undertake site surveys and develop practical engineering solutions
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
• Full UK driving licence
