Assistant General Manager Radiology, Band 6 (30 hours a week)
We are seeking a highly motivated and dynamic Assistant General Manager to join our Radiology Department within the Diagnostics and Specialties Division.
This is an exciting opportunity for an aspiring operational leader to develop their management experience within an NHS environment. Working closely with the General Manager, clinical leaders and multidisciplinary teams, you will play a key role in supporting service delivery, improving patient pathways and driving operational performance across Imaging services.
You will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day operational management of the service, ensuring patients receive timely access to diagnostic services while maintaining high standards of quality, safety and patient experience.
Main duties of the job
The Assistant General Manager will support the operational leadership and performance management of Radiology services, ensuring delivery against national and local targets, including RTT and cancer pathway standards.
The post holder will work closely with clinical and operational teams to drive service improvement and transformation initiatives, monitor and analyse performance data, develop recovery and improvement plans, and support the efficient delivery of patient pathways. They will build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, prepare reports for operational forums, support workforce management activities including recruitment, appraisal and staff development, and deputise for the General Manager as required. Through collaborative leadership, the role will contribute to improving service quality, patient experience, operational effectiveness and outcomes across Radiology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Assistant General Manager will support the operational delivery and performance management of Radiology services, ensuring patients progress through their diagnostic pathways safely and efficiently while meeting key national standards, including RTT, cancer and diagnostic targets.
The post holder will monitor performance, waiting lists, capacity and demand, identify risks and opportunities for improvement, and lead service improvement and transformation initiatives. They will provide leadership to administrative, booking and support teams, overseeing workforce management activities including recruitment, induction, appraisal, training, wellbeing and performance management. The role will also involve supporting complaints and incident processes, preparing reports for operational forums, managing resources effectively, and working collaboratively with clinical and non-collin colleagues to improve patient experience, service quality and operational performance across Radiology.

Qualifications
- GCSE English and Maths to C grade or higher
- Educated to degree level or equivalent level of knowledge, training and experience in an NHS operational or administrative environment.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development such as attendance at management training (I Lead, I Manage)
Experience
- Experience of working in an NHS operational, administrative or service delivery role within a busy healthcare environment.
- Experience of supporting team coordination, workload prioritization, rota cover or staff supervision
- Experience of managing or contributing to complaints investigations, preparing clear and timely responses, and ensuring learning is translated into service improvement actions.
- Previous experience in a relevant speciality
Knowledge, skill and Abilities
- Broad knowledge of the delivery of health services.
- In-depth knowledge of cancer and 18-week RTT targets and their application.
- Demonstrable knowledge of techniques for planning, monitoring and controlling projects and programmes.
- Able to work independently, use initiative and prioritise own and others’ workloads within agreed objectives.
- Can work under pressure and respond to short timescales, delivering work on time and with accuracy.
- Ability to lead, manage and motivate staff, command respect and create a strong sense of community within a team.
- Benefits-, target- and results-oriented, with a clear focus on service outcomes and continuous improvement.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and relevant project management software to produce high-quality reports for Divisional and Trust Boards and other audiences.

- Knowledge of capacity and demand modelling, with evidence of successful implementation.
- Knowledge and experience of managing complaints, concerns and patient feedback in accordance with Trust policy, including investigation, drafting responses, identifying themes and implementing learning.
- Analyse performance data to identify risks and areas for improvement, support recovery actions and present updates clearly.
