Role Overview
A welcoming and inclusive primary school in Birmingham is seeking a compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant to join its progressive learning support team. This full-time, term-time-only role involves working closely with pupils across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 who require targeted support for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD), and Speech, Language & Communication Needs (SLCN).
The position is well-suited for an experienced SEN Support Assistant or a psychology graduate seeking practical experience within a supportive West Midlands educational setting. Working under the guidance of the school SENCO and class teachers, you will help create a structured, safe, and engaging environment for pupils with individual Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
Key Responsibilities & Requirements
- Direct Pupil Support: Deliver individualised 1:1 and small-group learning interventions tailored to pupils’ personal EHCP objectives.
- Communication & Classroom Inclusion: Utilize visual timetables, PECS, and simple Makaton to promote communication, active involvement, and emotional self-regulation.
- Behaviour Management: Apply positive behaviour support strategies to assist pupils through transitions and maintain a calm classroom environment.
- Progress Monitoring: Record day-to-day pupil achievements and liaise regularly with class teachers, the SENCO, and visiting specialists (e.g., Speech & Language Therapists).
- Qualifications & Skills: Prior experience supporting children with additional needs, strong empathy and patience, good literacy and numeracy skills, and an Enhanced DBS check.
