Senior Database Administrator (DBA)

Overview

As a DBA at Barts Health, you will lead SQL database environments within the ICT Server Team to ensure availability, performance, and security. You will design, optimise, and developing the database infrastructure while coordinating with cross-functional teams on critical projects. You will tackle complex DB issues, implement security controls, and drive improvements to support a large organisation. This role offers the opportunity to influence data services at scale in a values‑driven NHS trust.

Responsibilities

• Review and improve RDBMS stability and security across databases
• Act as SME for database design, implementation, and optimisation in live and test environments
• Monitor, tune, and ensure high availability and performance of database environments
• Analyse and resolve complex database issues with minimal downtime
• Develop and enforce policies for DB management, security, and maintenance
• Lead database-related projects from planning through delivery within time/cost/quality constraints
• Perform software installation and configuration, coordinating with third-party vendors when needed

Key requirements

• Proven experience in a large organisation (preferably >5,000 users)
• 7–10 years managing SQL environments in virtualised environments
• 2–4 years managing SQL cloud services
• Experience supporting digital transformation projects (cloud migration and consolidation)
• 5+ years in technical project management
• Track record in implementing security measures and managing IT costs throughout application lifecycles
• Collaborations to improve service delivery and drive innovation
• 5–7 years IT experience with at least 2 years focused on SQL Database Technologies

• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
• Ability to communicate with executives, management, and staff at all levels
• Strong problem-analysis and technical fix capabilities
• SQL Server administration
• Performance tuning and troubleshooting
• Relational database design and data integrity
