The Company
Our client is a specialist engineering and manufacturing business designing and manufacturing safety-critical sensing, switching and instrumentation products for customers across the nuclear, defence, energy, marine, oil & gas and process industries.
Their products operate in some of the world’s most demanding environments, where reliability, safety, compliance and engineering integrity are critical.
Due to continued growth, and as part of a strategic push to develop their Defence and Nuclear business alongside continued growth in other markets, they are looking to appoint a Director of Engineering to lead and develop their international Engineering function across the UK, Bulgaria and Malaysia.
The Role
Reporting directly to the COO, the Director of Engineering will provide strategic and operational leadership across the Engineering function, transitioning leadership from the current Head of Engineering.
This is a senior product engineering leadership role, focused on the development, qualification, improvement and lifecycle support of safety-critical engineered products – including managing all engineering deliverables for “Non-Standard orders.” Around 25% of orders require some level of redesign, ranging from small customisation to full redesign, so a core part of this role is managing bespoke engineering change alongside standard delivery.
You will lead multidisciplinary engineering teams covering mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering across three sites, while strengthening engineering governance, product development processes and technical assurance across the organisation.
The successful candidate will bring strong technical credibility alongside proven experience leading engineering teams within a regulated product environment.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership
- Propose and deploy the engineering strategy in line with wider business objectives
- Manage engineering teams across three engineering sites (UK, Bulgaria, Malaysia)
- Develop adequate skills and capability, succession plans and future engineering leaders
- Build a high-performance culture focused on accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement
- Ensure engineering delivers against agreed performance objectives – on-time, quality, cost
Product Engineering & Development
- Lead the engineering delivery of standard and non-standard (bespoke) customer solutions
- Translate customer requirements into robust engineering specifications and product designs
- Oversee product development throughout the full product lifecycle
- Develop supporting processes and systems; drive improvements to engineering ways of working
Engineering Governance
- Strengthen requirements management across the engineering lifecycle
- Ensure full traceability from customer requirements through design, verification and acceptance
- Lead design reviews, risk reviews and engineering approval processes
- Maintain strong engineering change control and configuration management (including drawing/document control on amended products)
Compliance & Technical Assurance
- Ensure products meet customer specifications and applicable industry standards
- Oversee qualification, verification, validation and certification activities
- Strengthen functional safety, regulatory compliance and technical assurance processes
- Work closely with Quality, Manufacturing and Supply Chain to ensure products are compliant, manufacturable and supportable
Business & Customer Leadership
- Support business growth through engineering excellence, innovation and product development
- Develop strong relationships with customers, suppliers and regulatory stakeholders
- Contribute as a senior member of the leadership team
About You
You will be an experienced Engineering Director, Head of Engineering or senior engineering leader with a strong technical foundation and experience developing engineered products within a regulated environment.
Must Have
- British citizenship
- Experience leading an engineering organisation in a regulated industry
- Experience in the design and support of technological products mixing mechanical and electrical/electronic technologies, preferably in small-to-medium batch, for industrial, aerospace, medical and/or defence sectors
- A degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering
- Strong leadership and people management experience
- Sound understanding of the design process from concept through to production
Should Have
- Experience using and structuring CAD and data management systems
- Knowledge of ERP/MRP systems and configuration control
- Knowledge of ISO 9001
- Knowledge of metrology concepts
- Technical proficiency in sensing equipment specifically
- Master’s or PhD in Engineering
Could Have / Desirable
- Experience implementing CAD/data management systems with links to ERP
- Experience with industrial instrumentation and sensors
- Experience with Defence and SIL requirements
- Functional safety experience
- 15-20 years in an associated industry
- Design Authority, Product Authority or Chief Engineer experience
- Chartered Engineer status
