Mechanical and Principal/Senior Mechanical Engineer

Overview

As a Mechanical Engineer in the water sector, you will lead multidisciplinary wastewater and water treatment projects from feasibility to detailed design. You’ll collaborate with clients and project teams to develop mechanical solutions, review site infrastructure, and generate technical outputs. You will guide less experienced engineers and contribute to delivery across major frameworks while upholding design governance and safety standards. This role offers hands-on technical leadership with a focus on practical, compliant solutions that scale with project complexity.

Responsibilities

• Lead and contribute to wastewater and water treatment projects from feasibility through detailed design
• Develop mechanical solutions for pumping and aeration systems and produce technical outputs (specifications, calculations, drawings, reports, risk assessments)
• Review existing site infrastructure and ensure alignment with delivery goals
• Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and review work of junior engineers
• Support CDM compliance, design risk assessments, and maintain high QA standards
• Communicate technical information clearly, participate in workshops, manage work to time, cost, and quality

Key requirements

• Degree in mechanical engineering or closely allied subject (ideally IMechE accredited)
• Significant water industry experience
• Chartered or working towards chartership (ideally)
• Strong understanding of mechanical systems, P&IDs, specifications, procurement, and CDM regulations
• AutoCAD or Inventor experience advantageous
• Willingness to travel to operational and construction sites
