Category Specialist – Environment

Overview

In this role you will help deliver strategic procurement in the public sector, focusing on environment-related categories. You will work with stakeholders to shape category strategies, plans and tender documents, ensuring value-for-money and governance compliance. You will support supplier evaluations, negotiations and contract awards, driving improvements and efficiencies. The role offers the chance to lead complex procurement projects and contribute to essential public services through collaborative, cross-functional work. This is a hybrid role in London with a clear impact on procurement outcomes and public sector transformation.

Responsibilities

• Support the delivery of procurement projects across goods, works and services categories
• Develop procurement strategies, category plans and tender documentation with internal stakeholders
• Provide guidance to ensure compliance with public sector procurement law and governance
• Develop evaluation methodologies and assist in supplier submissions assessments
• Build relationships with stakeholders and suppliers to identify collaboration and value-for-money opportunities
• Support and lead supplier negotiations to achieve best commercial outcomes
• Manage procurement activity through tendering and contract award, ensuring accurate records and regulatory compliance
• For more experienced candidates, lead complex procurement projects and drive continuous improvement within spend areas

Key requirements

• Strong knowledge of UK Procurement Law and public sector best practice
• Procurement experience across goods, works and services in a complex organisation
• Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment with deadlines
• Strong analytical skills with financial and commercial data interpretation
• Excellent stakeholder management and relationship-building skills
• Strong written and verbal communication for reports, presentations and procurement documentation
• Advanced IT skills with procurement systems, e-procurement platforms and MS Office
• Experience in construction, facilities management, housing, highways, repairs and maintenance (advantageous)
• CIPS qualification, working towards CIPS, or equivalent procurement experience (preferred)
