Pre-Construction Engineer

Overview

In this role you will lead the pre-construction phase for major energy and infrastructure projects, ensuring robust planning, commercial viability, and deliverability. You will coordinate design, procurement, planning and construction inputs to produce viable handover-ready projects. You will work closely with clients and a range of internal and external stakeholders to mitigate risks and shape construction strategies. This is a chance to influence sizeable substations projects and contribute to a growing 2026 project pipeline. You will thrive in a fast-paced environment and help build a strong pre-construction function within the team.

Responsibilities

• Lead the pre-construction process from opportunity to handover
• Coordinate design, commercial, procurement, planning and construction activities during pre-construction
• Manage inputs from internal teams, consultants, subcontractors and suppliers
• Review requirements, specifications, designs and tender documentation
• Develop and manage pre-construction programmes, deliverables and milestones
• Identify and manage technical, commercial, programme and construction risks
• Support development of construction methodologies, build strategies and project solutions
• Coordinate design development and ensure deliverability from a commercial and practical perspective
• Lead engagement with subcontractors, suppliers and design consultants
• Support tender submissions, cost planning, procurement strategies and commercial reviews
• Clarify project assumptions, exclusions, risks and opportunities
• Ensure robust handover from pre-construction to delivery team
• Build strong relationships with clients and key project stakeholders
• Support and develop junior members of the pre-construction team

Key requirements

• 5+ years’ experience in construction, civil engineering or infrastructure
• Experience in pre-construction, estimating, design management, project management or bid management
• Experience coordinating multiple project disciplines and stakeholders
• Strong understanding of construction methodology and project delivery
• Ability to review and challenge designs, specifications and project requirements
• Strong commercial awareness and understanding of project risk
• Excellent communication, coordination and stakeholder management skills
• Ability to manage deadlines and multiple workstreams in a fast-paced environment
