Credit Benchmark is a financial data and analytics company transforming how global credit risk is understood and managed. Founded by serial entrepreneurs and backed by leading investors including Balderton Capital and Index Ventures, we’re a fast-growing team of technology, finance, and data experts committed to making financial markets safer and more transparent. With headquarters in London and offices in New York and Bangalore, we bring a global perspective to the challenge of credit risk and capital management.
What we do
Credit Benchmark provides a unique, data-driven alternative to traditional credit ratings through our innovative Credit Consensus Ratings. By aggregating and anonymizing internal risk views from 40 of the world’s largest financial institutions, we deliver forward-looking, one-year Probabilities of Default and powerful analytics on over 125,000 entities—five times the coverage of traditional rating agencies. Our data helps global financial institutions and businesses make better-informed decisions, optimize capital allocation, and de-risk the critical decisions on which the financial system depends. From corporates to funds to public entities, we offer a uniquely comprehensive “view of the street” on credit risk.
The role/opportunity
Reporting to the Head of Technology in London, we are looking for a senior database developer with strong data architectural skills to take ownership of the design, integrity, and performance of the data platform that powers Credit Benchmark’s products. The majority of our development team is based in Bangalore, and you’ll be working closely with Product Owners and Operations teams across London, Bangalore, and New York.
This is a hands‑on role with real architectural weight: you won’t just implement schemas and queries against a spec, you’ll shape how data is modelled, structured, and evolved across our platform. You will have the opportunity to work on both green‑field projects and the enhancement of existing, mature systems with genuine ownership of database solutions and the scope to imprint your own thinking on how they’re built.
You will be working with our enterprise‑level SQL Server core data platform, with the opportunity to expand your horizons by contributing to work across our full stack — C#, Python, Node, React, R, and Machine Learning and by getting involved as we begin to bring modern data fabrics such as Snowflake and Databricks alongside our SQL Server core.
What we are looking for
- Someone who has grown from strong, hands‑on SQL development into thinking architecturally about data, schema design, data modelling, and the trade‑offs behind them, rather than someone who architects in the abstract without having built and run production database systems
- A strong SQL Server developer first, with the judgement and experience to take on architectural ownership of how CB’s data is modelled and structured
- Comfortable moving between deep, detailed development work and higher‑level design decisions about data flow, structure, and long‑term maintainability.
- Someone who wants ownership — of database solutions, of design decisions, and of getting them right — not just delivery against a fixed spec.
- Curious about where our platform is heading, including our early moves toward modern data fabrics such as Databricks alongside our SQL Server core.
What you’ll do / key responsibilities
- Maintain and enhance the data platform that powers CB’s suite of products
- Experience in analyzing and troubleshooting production database issues using Redgate monitoring/logs, with strong root‑cause analysis and performance diagnostics skills
- Analyse, design, and implement database solutions for given business and technical problems
- Enhance existing backend data platforms to deliver new business requirements
- Maintain existing database and reporting solutions across the full SQL Server suite, including SSIS/SSRS packages
- Build data pipelines using modern tooling such as dbt, alongside existing SSIS/SSRS where relevant
- Own schema and data model design decisions, applying sound data warehousing principles to both operational and analytical workloads
- Assess and evolve the data platform’s structure as CB’s products and data volumes grow, balancing performance, maintainability, and cost
- Contribute to decisions on how the platform incorporates modern data fabric capabilities (e.g. Databricks, Snowflake) alongside the SQL Server core
- Document data architecture, schema design decisions, and data flows to support long‑term maintainability, onboarding, and audit
- Work closely with mid‑and front‑end developers to design solutions end to end
- Partner with Product Owners and Operations teams across London, Bangalore, and New York to translate business and operational needs into data solutions
- Coordinate with other software professionals and developers across the wider technology team, the majority of whom are based in Bangalore
- Follow secure and efficient coding practices, and support the team’s broader engineering standards
- Operate within an Agile, squad‑based delivery environment
What we want to see/key role requirements
- SQL Server background — 8+ years’ experience
- Essential to have strong SQL Server skills (ideally on SQL 2019+)
- Expert understanding of T‑SQL
- Performance tuning and index optimisation experience
- Knowledge of SQL Server In‑Memory OLTP infrastructure
- Demonstrated data architecture ability — not just implementing designs, but making and defending schema and data modelling decisions
- Hands‑on experience with database monitoring tools such as Redgate SQL Monitor to diagnose production issues, analyze performance bottlenecks, and perform root‑cause analysis
- Experience with SQL Server database release processes, including schema migrations, deployment scripts, versioning, rollback strategies, and production release validation
- Solid experience modelling, designing, and deploying database solutions using Microsoft’s SQL Server Data Tools
- Hands‑on experience with dbt for data transformation, building version‑controlled, testable pipelines
- Experience with Power BI, including paginated/report‑server style reporting, for both interactive and operational reporting needs
- Strong understanding of data warehousing models (Inmon and Kimball), with previous exposure to BI solutions.
- A full understanding of the database development lifecycle — design, implementation, and release process.
- Experience working with Git, Jira, and SQL Sentry (or equivalent monitoring/performance tools)
- Secure and efficient coding practices, with good analytical and troubleshooting skills
- Excellent written and spoken English, with strong communication skills
- Understanding of Agile methodologies
Technical environment
Our platform: a SQL Server core data platform, with C#, Python, Node, and React across the wider stack. Deep SQL expertise is essential — genuinely strong relational data skills at scale, including schema and index design, query and execution‑plan optimisation, and diagnosing performance problems in a large production database.
Experience of modern data fabrics such as Databricks or Snowflake is very welcome — our aspiration is to start using these alongside our SQL Server core, and this role will be close to those decisions as they develop.
On the data pipeline side, we value awareness across both established tools such as SSIS/SSRS and newer approaches such as dbt, Airflow, or AWS Glue — dbt experience is essential, with the others a strong plus.
- Previous experience in working in cloud environments (AWS preferred) is a definite plus.
- Familiarity with legacy SSIS/SSRS, useful for maintaining existing packages, as well as newer orchestration/ingestion tools such as Airflow or AWS Glue.
- Exposure to cloud data warehouse/data fabric platforms such as Snowflake or Databricks.
- A good understanding of financial markets.
- Background in credit or financial data, fintech, SaaS, or data analytics
What we offer/benefits
- Real ownership – genuine scope to shape database and data architecture decisions, not just implement someone else’s spec
- Experience and exposure – the opportunity to work closely with senior stakeholders on decisions that shape the business, and with leading financial risk products and technologies
- Work with a small, smart team – Join a tight‑knit, high‑calibre team of experts spanning London, New York, and Bengaluru
- Company Benefits – Competitive holiday package, comprehensive private health insurance and company pension scheme
- Health and Wellbeing – Healthy work/life balance with a hybrid working pattern and support to make your home set up comfortable
- Learning and Development – Professional development opportunities through seminars, conferences, training and courses and internal mentorship
- Community – Supportive, collaborative and social team environment
